What is the purpose of the ComEd Icebox Derby?

The purpose of the ComEd Icebox Derby is to continue to encourage young girls to lean into the role that innovations such as renewable energy and technology can play throughout the derby events in order to further enhance STEM learning opportunities for young girls of Chicagoland to be part of the STEM workforce of the future.

What is STEM?

STEM corresponds with the academic disciplines related to science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

How do I sign up to participate?

To enter the contest during the contest entry period, please visit www.iceboxderby.com and complete the entry form in its entirety.

When can I enter the contest?

This year's Contest to be a part of ComEd's Icebox Derby will begin in May.

Is there a cost associated?

There is no cost associated with entering.

Who is eligible to participate in the ComEd Icebox Derby?

Girls ages 13-18 who reside in Illinois and who will be enrolled in 7th - 12th grade as of May 2018. All participants must have a parent’s or legal guardian’s permission to enter and participate.

Do I have to have a parent’s and/or legal guardian’s permission to enter and participate?

Yes, all participants must have a parent’s or legal guardian’s permission to enter and participate.

Is there a deadline for submission?

The submission period will begin in May. Check back for specific details in the coming months.

How involved will parents and/or legal guardians be?

Upon participants submitting an entry, entrants’ parent/legal guardian will be sent an email to the address provided at the time of entry with instructions to confirm that he/she agrees to his/her child’s participation in the promotion and has read, understood and accepted the Official Rules.

The parents/legal guardians can attend build days, race day and have the opportunity to participate in breakout sessions where they will learn ways to encourage a STEM mindset at home.

Can entries be disqualified?

Yes, Sponsors can disqualify entries if the entry includes inappropriate, offensive or other derogatory language, content or information, or if they do not abide by the rules.

Do I need to be an A student to join?

No, participants are chosen based on their understanding and expression of STEM principles, appropriateness of response related to the promotion theme, creativity/originality and quality of their entry.

How does the panel of judges determine the elected participants?

All eligible entries will be judged by a panel of judges appointed by the Sponsor, who will use the criteria below to determine 30 potential participants from among all eligible entries received.

  1. Understanding and expression of interest in STEM: 40%
  2. Appropriateness of response related to program theme: 20%
  3. Creativity/Originality: 20%
  4. Quality of Entry: 20%

Where is the ComEd Icebox Derby race taking place?

What is a Sponsor’s role throughout the promotional period of the ComEd Icebox Derby?

ComEd, as the Sponsor of this event, is supporting the growth of STEM to young woman across Chicagoland. Additionally, ComEd will be deploying employees who will mentor and assist in the assembly of workshops, preparation and supervision of race day competition. Sponsor mentors will not participate as a vehicle driver during race day events. Sponsor mentors will not provide correct answers to STEM challenges on race day to their respective team.

How soon after the race will winners be notified?

Potential grand prize winners will be notified at the conclusion of the race. In addition, they will also be notified officially in writing by mail or other form of home delivery.

Are build days held during a specific time or on a team’s own schedule?

Build Days are from 6pm to 9pm each of the days below

  1. Build Day One: Tuesday July 24
  2. Build Day Two: Thursday July 26
  3. Build Day Three: Tuesday July 31
  4. Build Day Four: Thursday August 2

Where will build days for the ComEd Icebox Derby be held?

Build days will be held in the evening at the ComEd build day headquarters in Chicago.

How many mentors get devoted to each team?

Each team will have a minimum of one mentor who will assist in the assembly of workshops, preparation and supervision of race day competition.

How long will the race last on race day?

The 2018 ComEd Icebox Derby will last about 3 hours on Saturday August 4, 2018.

How are participants chosen out of the pool of submissions?

Participants are chosen by a panel of independent, third-party judges appointed by the Sponsor. Eligible entries will be judged based on the following pre-determined set of criteria among all eligible entries received.

  1. Understanding and expression of STEM principles: 40%
  2. Appropriateness of response related to promotion theme: 20%
  3. Creativity/Originality: 20%
  4. Quality of Entry: 20%

Top 30 entries receiving the highest scores will be deemed the potential participants.

How soon will applicants be notified if they were chosen to participate?

Potential participants will be notified by Sponsor on or around June 30.

How will participants be contacted?

Potential participants will be notified via email and or other form of home delivery as provided. All participants will be required to complete, sign and return an affidavit of eligibility, a liability release and an IRS W9 form.

How are winners of the ComEd Icebox Derby race day event determined?

Winners are determined by:

The teams that cross the finish line in the shortest total time based on completing the preliminary race heat as well as the correct completion of the STEM challenges.

One final grand prize championship three-lap race will be conducted between the vehicles of the two teams that win a preliminary race heat.

What are the participant prizes of the ComEd Icebox Derby race?

There are 30 participant prizes available to be won. Each participant prize includes $1,500 awarded in the form of a check.

What are the build day prizes of the ComEd Icebox Derby race?

There are 30 build day prizes available to be won, one for each five members of the team declared the winner(s) of each of the four build day challenges. Each build day prize includes one tablet computer.

What is the grand prize of the ComEd Icebox Derby race?

Grand Prizes: There are 5 grand prizes available to be won. Each grand prize includes one (1) Icebox Derby medal and a celebration with the Icebox Derby trophy at each team members school.

If I am a male interested in the science, math, engineering and technology, can I participate in the ComEd Icebox Derby event?

This event is exclusively for girls ages 13-18, but anyone is welcome to come cheer them on, come race day!

Do participants need any specific equipment or technology to participate or will everything be provided to participants?

Participants will have all the equipment they need on build days provided to them.

Will each team be provided the same instructions and tools to build the car?

Yes!

Is the ComEd Icebox Derby race day event open to the public?

Yes. Come one, come all!

You must be a resident of Illinois to enter.

What happens if the weather does not hold out for the ComEd Icebox Derby?

If weather does not permit, race day may be rescheduled for an alternate time, or another day at the Sponsor’s sole discretion at the same or an alternate location.

If I want to participate but my parents won’t approve, can I still participate?

You need approval from a parent or a legal guardian in order to be eligible for participation in the promotion.

Can I videotape and take photos of the project?

Yes, we encourage all participants, sponsors, friends and family to take photos. Feel free to share your experience on social media and tag our pages.

What if I get chosen and then can no longer attend? Is someone else allowed to take my place?

Time permitting, the Sponsor will select an alternate.

What happens if there is a tie during the ComEd Icebox Derby race, meaning multiple cars have crossed the finish line at the exact same second?

In the unlikely event of a tie in either the outdoor Vehicle Race or the indoor/inclement weather competition, the tied teams will participate in a final STEM related tie-breaking question or skill test and must answer the question correctly within the stated time limits. The first of the tied teams to correctly answer the question will be deemed the potential ComEd Icebox Derby Grand Prize winning team. If additional tie breaker questions are required to break additional ties, the above tie-breaking mechanism will be replicated. Accuracy of answers to tie-breaker questions will be determined at Sponsor’s sole discretion.

Yes!

Will there be parking around the venue for participants and spectators?

There is public parking surrounding the Daley Plaza, prices vary.

What does the ComEd Icebox Derby do for the community?

For the past five years since its inception, the ComEd Icebox Derby has provided learning opportunities, exposure to exciting information and prizes to 120 young women across Chicagoland. This year, for the fifth consecutive year, the ComEd Icebox Derby will add 30 more young women to that total.

If I am interested in STEM but not actively involved in the disciplines, can I still enter in the promotion?

Yes!

Will finalists be photographed? If so, where will the photos be shown?

Yes! Photographs will be showcased on iceboxderby.com and on the ComEd social channels.

Can I edit my application once I have entered my application?

No!
